Nebraska Downs Cowboys, 15-7
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
The runs were the most given up by Cowboy pitchers this season as the Pokes lost for the first time in their last seven conference games. Nebraska moved to 22-10 overall and 9-5 in Big 12 play while Oklahoma State fell to 25-9 overall and 8-6 in conference action.
Carlos Gautreaux opened the game with a double down the right field and later scored on a fielder's choice by Josh Holliday. Holliday scored on an RBI single by Lamont Matthews to give the Cowboys an early 2-0 lead. Matthews extended his hitting streak to nineteen games, the Pokes longest of the season.
Nebraska rallied to take the lead with four runs in the second off of Cowboy starter Thom Dreier. Danny Kimura, Will Bolt and Adam Stern each had RBI singles in the frame to give the Cornhuskers their first lead of the series.
Nebraska knocked out Dreier in the third with back-to-back homers by Jeff Hedman, a two-run shot, and Ken Harvey, his 13th of the year. Harvey, the nation's leader in batting average, went four-for-five with four RBIs.
Dreier fell to 4-2 on the season after pitching two innings and giving up seven runs on nine hits in his shortest outing of the year as a starter.
The Cowboys plated two in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4. Trevor Leu hit a RBI single and Lamont Matthews scored from third off a wild pitch from Husker starter Shane Komine.
That was the closest the Pokes got as Nebraska outscored OSU 8-3 the rest of the way. The Cowboy runs came from a Chris Becerra RBI single in the sixth, a solo homer by Toby Rhodes in the seventh and a RBI double by Carlos Gautreaux in the ninth. Gautreaux paced the Cowboys at the plate going three-for-four with two doubles and one RBI.
Komine pitched the complete game and gave up seven runs on eight hits and struck out nine in moving to 6-1 on the season.
Both teams will be back in action in the rubber game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
