Summers, who has been at the University of the South since 1997, has served as offensive coordinator at three schools and tutored under some of the most successful coaches in college football, including Jerry Pettibone, Jackie Sherrill and Fran Curci.
From 1990 through 1996, he served at Oregon State. While he was at Oregon State, the school registered four straight years as the number one rushing offense in the PAC-10. He was named the Top Offensive Backfield Coach in the PAC-10 in 1993 and 1994.
Prior to his stint at Oregon State he spent six years at Northern Illinois. He was coordinator for an offense that established 51 school records and seven NCAA records.
From 1982 to 1985 he was an assistant coach at Texas A&M and four years prior to that he served at Kentucky as running back coach and quarterback coach.
"I am very excited to be part of the Oklahoma State football program," Summers said. "Coach Simmons is an outstanding coach and it's a privilege to be joining this staff."
In three years at the University of the South, he was Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. He coached an offense that was fifth in the nation in rushing and second in the conference in total offense.
"Mike Summers is a highly qualified coach who has been successful at every stop along his career," Coach Simmons said. "He has not only been successful on the field, he is a proven recruiter. He will bring a lot of experience to our staff."
Summers earned a Bachelor of Science from Georgetown College in Kentucky in 1978. He completed post graduate studies at Kentucky in 1980. He and his wife Kathy have one daughter, Amy (16).
