McQuarters to Enter NFL Draft
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Football
McQuarters just completed his third year at OSU. He was a two-way starter for the Cowboys who finished 8-4 with an appearance in the Builders Square Alamo Bowl earlier this week.
"This is a decision I know came after a lot of thought," said Simmonds. "R.W. is obviously a gifted football player who has a bright future. Although we are disappointed he is leaving early, we wish him the best and certainly encourage him to finish his education at some point."
McQuarters, a Parade All American out of Tulsa's Booker T. Washington High School, was a three-year starter for the Cowboys. His career statistics included 164 total tackles and six interceptions.
In the recently completed 1997 season, he was first team All Big 12 as a defensive back and a kick returner. He had 38 tackles and caused seven fumbles. In the Alamo Bowl earlier this week, he was in on more than 100 plays and finished with 43 yards on four receptions on offense and four solo takcles, an interception and three deflections on defense.
McQuarters earned his first collegiate start as a true freshman in 1995. That season he had 62 tackles and three interceptions and was first team All Big Eight as a kick returner after averaging 23.9 yards on 27 punt returns.
As a sophomore in 1996 he started the first seven games before being sidelined with a broken foot. He was honorable mention All Big 12 as a defensive back as a sophomore.
During his three year Oklahoma State career, McQuarters started 30 games, including 11 as a freshman, seven as a sophomore and 12 as a junior. The only games he did not start during his OSU career were the Nebraska game in 1995 and four games he missed because of injury in 1996.
Coming out of Washington High School, McQuarters was a USA Today and Parade All American. He was the Defensive Player of the Year by both the Tulsa World and Daily Oklahoman and rated the number one defensive prospect in the region by Blue Chip Illustrated.
In high school he was also a standout on the basketball team and was on Eddie Sutton's OSU squad as a freshman sophomore.
