Mayes, McQuarters Named to Preseason All-Big 12 Team

Senior tight end Alonzo Mayes, who was consensus All-Big 12 after his junior season, was named to the preseason squad as was junior defensive back R.W. McQuarters.
Mayes, an Oklahoma City Douglas product, led Oklahoma State last year with 30 catches for 512 yards and three touchdowns. He was the seventh-leading receiver in the Big 12 Conference last year but is the second-leading pass catcher in the league returning in 1997.
McQuarters, from Tulsa©s Booker T. Washington High School, was named to the elite preseason list as a defensive back. Last year, he had 64 total tackles, the fourth-best mark on the team, despite missing four games with a broken ankle.
Nine of the league©s 12 schools were represented on the preseason squad, and Oklahoma State was one of five schools that had two or more players on the team. Nebraska placed seven on the preseason list while defending champion Texas had five and Colorado four. OSU and Kansas State each had two players on the list.
Oklahoma State opens the 1997 season on Aug. 30 in Ames, Iowa, against Iowa State. OSU©s freshmen and newcomers report to Stillwater on Aug. 4, with the full squad reporting to campus on Aug. 7.
