Football Wraps Up Week with Scrimmage
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Football
Fifth-year head coach Bob Simmons put his squad through a 100-plus play scrimmage that featured extensive work by all units on both sides of the ball. There were highlights on both sides, including the play of junior quarterback Tony Lindsay.
Lindsay, from Denver's Thomas Jefferson High School, completed six-of-eight passes for 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns and rushed four times for 25 yards. His touchdown passes were to tight end Garrett Steggs and fullback Kevin Brown.
On the defensive side, the secondary appeared to play well and drew positive comments from Simmons.
"I thought the cornerbacks played excellently," Simmons said. "I think our secondary has a chance to be as good as the one we had a couple of years ago."
Overall, OSU's coach said the scrimmage went well but would be further evaluated.
"I saw some good things," he said. "I also saw some things that we probably need to improve. We'll watch the film and try to come back next week and correct our mistakes."
Oklahoma State will take Sunday off before resuming preseason drills Monday afternoon. The Cowboys open the 1999 season September 4 against Southwestern Louisiana on Lewis Field.
Bob Simmons' Quotes Following Preseason Scrimmage
General comments "This was a day for us to evaluate some people, so we mixed some first-team and second-team guys. We did not want to play Tony Lindsay a lot, we wanted to get a pulse on our three quarterbacks. We want to go into next week and make that list as short as possible as we prepare for the season. I saw some good things, I also saw some things that we probably need to improve on. We're going to watch film this evening and try to come back next week and correct our mistakes."
On the offensive line "We had some 15- and 16-play drives. You don't want turnovers when you're down on the 5-yard line. We had a good sequence going with both teams, and we'd throw an interception or fumble the football. But I thought for the most part that we had a good mixture of run and pass with the offense. I think we have enough combinations that we will have a pretty good offensiveline, so I'm not that over-concerned. I just want to go into next week and solidify who those people are going to be."
On the play of the OSU secondary "I thought the corners played excellently. Our guys were putting up some passes that should have been picked off, but I think our secondary has a chance to be just as good as the one we had a couple of years ago. When you talk about Porter, Howell and Shepherd, those guys at corners are going to help us."
On the No. 2 quarterback battle "It's tight. I think next week, we'll have to get those individuals a little more work. You really have to have three going into the season, so we're going to have to find out who those guys are going to be."
On Ben Bowling "He does some good things. Obviously, he's still learning right now. We asked him to make a read on the secondary, and if he had seen where the safety was going, he would have gone back-side. I'm sure he'd like to have some of those balls back, but that's all part of the learning process."
On the scrimmage as the end of preseason camp "For us, it is. We talked about that earlier. We said that we were going to make some strong evaluations and really cut back some people's times as we go into next week and look forward to playing that first ballgame."
On the injury suffered by Reggie White and Jamaal Fobbs' status as the only completely healthy returning running back "I really don't know anything (about White's injury). I haven't had a chance to talk to our trainers, so I don't know how serious it is. That's a position that we started off with four, and then three, two one, and now it's Jamaal, Jamaal and Jamaal. Gabe Lindsay can play tailback, and I expect Nathan to come back, but that right now is not a position we have numbers at."
On the recovery process of Nathan Simmons "Nathan's been practicing all week, we just didn't scrimmage him today. Again, I do expect him to be ready for that first game. There's some things he has to do, but I expect him to be ready. I'm going to listen to the trainers, but we can't go into that first game without any contact. he's been getting contact, but they've been standup things."
On the sharp play of Tony Lindsay "He's been that way since before the spring, and it's flat-out carried over. You can call a formation -- call it wrong -- and he knows the right formation. That just shows you how far he's come. I think we basically have a quarterback who's going to one of the best in the Big 12."
