Cowboys Slug Past Kansas State, 13-4

OSU improved to 21-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play while winning for the ninth time in 10 contests. Kansas State fell to 13-16 overall and 5-8 in Big 12 play.
Billy Gasparino hit his 14th homer of the year, a solo shot, in the bottom of the first which gave the Cowboys an 1-0 lead. After Kansas State scored a run of their own off a Kyle Boyer single in the second, OSU exploded for four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, two coming off of Lamont Matthews 12th homer of the season, to give the Pokes a 5-1 advantage.
The Wildcats scored another run in the third to cut the lead to 5-2 but OSU put the game out of reach with six runs in its half of the third to make the score 11-2. Two of the Cowboys runs in the inning came off of RBI singles by Carlos Gautreaux and Kevin Lucas.
OSU added two more runs off of solo homers by Josh Holliday in the sixth and Lance Smith in the eighth while Kansas State added two runs of its own in the seventh and eighth to make the score 13-4.
OSU starter Thom Dreier gave up one earned run off of seven hits and tied a season high of nine strikeouts to move to 4-1 on the season while KSU starter Brandon Peck dropped to 4-5 with the loss.
The Cowboys and Wildcats will be back in action in the second game of the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium. Lefthander Matt Smith (5-1, 2.05 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Oklahoma State while Kansas State will counter with lefty Derek Andersen (4-4, 5.03 ERA).
