Cowboys Complete Second Major Scrimmage
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Football
The Cowboys worked for more than two hours on a sun-drenched Lewis Field and, just two weeks from the season opener at Southern Mississippi, Head Coach Les Miles says his squad is where it needs to be.
"We've got two weeks," Miles said. "We're going to be healthy and have two solid weeks to prepare so I really believe we are where we need to be."
The health question was raised when several starters were held out of Saturday's scrimmage. Tailback Tatum Bell suffered a slight concussion early in the week and did not suit up on Saturday. Paul Jones (knee) and Elbert Craig (hip) were also held out of Saturday's scrimmage. All three plus tackle Kyle Eaton and tailback D.D. Cox are expected back on the practice field next week.
"You never get accomplished exactly what you want," Miles said about the workout. "But their health was more important today than what we might have accomplished in a scrimmage."
The Cowboys did get solid performances from players on both sides. Quarterback Aso Pogi completed 9-of-15 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown was a 25-yarder to Rashaun Woods.
Freshman Josh Fields saw extensive playing time Saturday, completing 7-of-10 passes for 24 yards. Woods was OSU's leading receiver with four catches for 49 yards. Terrance Davis-Bryant had three catches for 30 yards and eight other OSU receivers had at least one catch on the day.
On the defensive side, end Greg Richmond had five tackles, including one for minus yardage. Linebacker Terrence Robinson had four tackles, including one for minus five yards and senior Dwayne Levels added four tackles.
OSU's offense scored four touchdowns on the day. In addition to the 25-yard pass from Pogi to Woods, the Cowboys scored on a one-yard run by Mike Denard, a 14-yard run by Chris Massey and on an 11-yard pass from Will Ahrberg to Adonis Brewer.
Massey's playing time Saturday came at quarterback but with Fields healthy and back on the practice field, he is expected to devote most of his time next week at his regular strong safety slot.
The Cowboys will take Monday off from practice as classes begin at OSU but resume normal workouts Tuesday afternoon. OSU's season opener is September 1 at Southern Mississippi.
