Baseball's Matthews Named Big 12 Player of the Week
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Matthews led the Cowboys to a 4-1 week while batting .550 (11-for-20), hitting a grand slam home run, driving in 11 runs, scoring eight runs, blasting a pair of doubles and two triples, and reaching base 14 times in 24 total plate appearances. He did not commit an error in eight fielding chances in the outfield and edged one of the Big 12's largest weekly field of Phillips 66 Player of the Week contenders, including the likes of Baylor's Jaime Bubela, Nebraska's Ken Harvey, Kansas State's Kasey Weishaar, and Oklahoma's Zach Leske, among others.
Jennings followed up a 22-strikeout week over 16 innings pitched from Mar. 15-21 with his second Pitcher of the Week award. He limited hitters from then-10th-ranked Texas Tech to three hits, one unearned run, struck out nine and walked two in the Bears' 2-1 triumph over the Red Raiders to open a three-game sweep by Baylor. The conference's No. 2 team, which moved up to a season-highest national ranking of 13th in this week's COLLEGIATE BASEBALL poll, eventually edged the Red Raiders 6-5 (10 innings) and 9-8 in the next two Big 12 weekend meetings between the powers.
