Baseball Squad Falls to Harvard, 10-6
April 07, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys and Crimson were locked in a pitching dual for the first five innings before both offenses took over. OSU starter Dale Pearson pitched six and a third innings of three-hit ball and allowed only one earned run with five strikeouts. Harvard starter Garrett Vail pitched for five innings and gave up two earned runs off of three hits while striking out six Cowboy batters.
OSU opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Billy Gasparino hit his 12th homer of the season to leftfield. Harvard rallied to score a run in the top of the sixth off of second baseman Peter Woodforks RBI single and tied the game at 1-1.
Trent Kitschs RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth gave Oklahoma State a 2-1 lead but Harvard rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-2 lead.
The Crimson lead did not last long as the Pokes rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at six. All four runs were accounted for by two-RBI singles by Billy Gasparino and Lamont Matthews.
Harvard took advantage of three OSU errors in the seventh and eighth and scored nine runs in the two innings, only one of which was earned.
Woodfork paced Harvard offensively with a 4-for-5 day at the plate with five RBIs while Oklahoma State was led by Matthews who finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Mike Madden (1-0) picked up the win for the Crimson while Ryan Herrmann (1-2) was tagged with the loss.
Head coach Tom Holliday was disappointed with the Cowboys performance in the loss which snapped the teams five-game win streak. "It's disappointing and we have to do better than that. We are 25 games into the season and we need to better than we are offensively. We broke down defensively and all of the errors were costly. Now its gut check time, we have to get better-alot better," said Holliday.
Oklahoma State will face Dartmouth, who lost to Ohio State 7-2 earlier in the day, at 10 a.m. CST tommorrow in the consolation game. The Cowboys will play Harvard again Sunday at 6 p.m. to wrap up the Florida trip.
