Baseball Routs Kansas State 13-2

The Cowboys continued its torrid assault at the plate with 18 hits in the contest and have now hit nine homers in the two wins over the Wildcats.
Jay McCullough's RBI single in the first put the Cowboys on the board first and the team never looked back after that. OSU scored three runs in the second off of back-to-back homers by Carlos Gautreaux, a two run job, and Jimbo McAuliff which gave the Pokes a 4-0 advantage. Matt Mabrey's sacrifice fly in the third gave OSU a 5-0 lead before Kansas State responded with a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-1.
OSU scored four runs in the fifth and in the eighth to put the game away and boost the Cowboys winning streak to five games.
Lamont Matthews hit a pair of dingers to up his total to 14 on the season while Toby Rhodes added a pinch-hit two-run homer, his fifth of the season giving the Pokes 25 homers in 11 conference matchups.
Sophomore Matt Smith gave up two runs on six hits in seven innings of work while striking out nine to move to 6-1 on the season. Wildcat starter Derek Andersen dropped to 4-5 on the year with the loss.
The win upped the Cowboys ledger to 22-8 overall and 6-5 in Big 12 play while Kansas State dropped to 13-17 on the season and 5-9 in conference action.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the series finale as junior Denny New (1-1, 5.33 ERA) will get the start for the Pokes while Brett Reid (2-1, 6.64) will be on the hill for the Wildcats.
