Aggies Drop Cowboys, 7-4
April 03, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
The Aggies win gave them their first series win over the Cowboys in Big 12 play.
All four OSU runs were a direct result of home runs. Lamont Matthews, Josh Holliday and Trevor Leu all went deep for the Pokes who dropped two straight games for the first time this season.
Thom Dreier (1-1) took the loss for the Cowboys, his first of the season. Dreier pitched four innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits in four innings while striking out three.
Caple, who pitched the complete game, gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out nine and moved to 3-1 on the year.
Texas A&M scored two runs in the bottom of the first and the third innings giving them an early 4-0 advantage.
Rightfielder Lamont Matthews hit a solo homer to leftfield for the Pokes in the fourth which cut the lead to 4-1.
After A&M added another run in the bottom of the fourth the Cowboys would score again in the top of the sixth. With Matthews on first with a walk, Holliday belted his third homer of the season to rightfield which cut the Aggie lead to 5-3.
Texas A&M struck back with runs in the sixth and the eighth giving them a 7-3 lead going into the ninth.
Designated hitter Trevor Leu, who had struck out in his first three at-bats, hit a solo homer to right which cut the A&M lead to 7-4. The Cowboys fell short in the rally, however, as Caple came back to retire the next three batters and give the Aggies their third straight win over Oklahoma State.
Cowboy head coach Tom Holliday while impressed with Caples performance also believed his club did not take advantage of its opportunites. Caple was very good and once he got the the lead he settled down and relaxed and let his defense make the plays. We had chances with guys on base but grounded into double plays and just didnt get the job done offensively.
Oklahoma State will close out the three game series with the Aggies tommorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Scheduled to pitch for the Cowboys will be junior lefthander Denny New.
