Oklahoma State Rallies To Win 10-9 In 10 Innings

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Center fielder Jose Virgil broke a 9-9 tie game with a RBI single in the top of the tenth to lead Oklahoma State to a 10-9 win over Texas A&M Saturday night at Olsen Field.
The Cowboys trailed 9-8 heading into the top of the ninth, and were down to their final out after John Urick and Jason Jaramillo flied out. Aggie reliever Logan Kensing then hit designated Mario Matulich, who was then pinch ran for by pitcher Shane Hawk. Pinch hitter Ryan Olivo then delivered a RBI double into the right-center field gap to tie the game.
Shortstop Shawn Callahan reached on an error to open the tenth and advanced to second on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Lyndsey Simmons. Virgil then delivered a single up the middle that scored Callahan to give OSU a 10-9 lead.
The Aggies did not give up, however, in the bottom of the tenth as John Infante opened the inning with a double down the left field line. Cowboy closer Daniel Rew struck out the next two batters and walked second baseman Eric Shindewolf before getting third baseman Cliff Pennington to fly to center to end the game
That was a special win for us, it literally took everybody on our team to get us the win, said assistant coach Josh Holliday. We have a bunch of competitors and our offense never quit, no matter how far we were behind.
Oklahoma State improved to 26-12 and 9-5 in the Big 12, while Texas A&M fell to 31-12 and 11-6 in league play.
The Aggies scored their first run on a RBI single by right fielder Cory Patton and then added three more on a homer by left fielder Scott Beerer to make it 4-0. OSU shortstop Chris Gutierrez had a fielding error with two outs that extended the inning for A&M an allowed the Aggies to add two more unearned runs to the lead.
OSU left fielder Scott Kirby cut the A&M lead in half, with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second off of A&M starter Matt Farnum. The Pokes continued to slice into the lead in the third when designated hitter Mario Matulich came through with a two-out two-run single up the middle to make it 6-5.
Kirby tied the game at 6-6 with a solo homer in the fourth and then took the lead on a fielders choice RBI by Jose Virgil and a RBI single by first baseman John Urick.
Texas A&M cut the OSU lead to 8-7 in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single by catcher Justin Pouk.
A&M tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Cliff Pennington off of reliever Aaron Whitehead and then took the lead on a RBI single by center fielder Justin Ruggiano.
Rew (1-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of one-hit scoreless relief, while Logan Kensing took the loss to drop to 5-5 on the campaign.
Lyndsey Simmons and Jose Virgil both had three hits while Scott Kirby was 2-for-4 with two homers and four runs scored in the winning effort.
The teams will close out the series with the rubber game tomorrow at 2 p.m. Junior right hander Joe Weaver will get the start for the Cowboys, while the Aggies will counter with senior lefty Zach Dixon.
