Hunter Mahan Finishes In 28th Place At The Masters
April 19, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
Paired with Angel Cabrera, the Cowboy junior entered the day at two-over and tied for 18th place after carding rounds of 73, 72 and 73 to open the tournament. Mahan finished with a 72-hole total of 294, six-over-par, to tie Darren Clarke, Fred Couples, Sergio Garcia and former OSU player Charles Howell.
During his final round, Mahan opened with bogeys on Nos. 1 and 3 before a birdie at the par-3 fourth hole. However, three consecutive bogeys followed before the 2002 first-team All-American closed out his front nine with a birdie and a par to turn in 39, three-over.
Four consecutive pars followed a bogey on the 10th before Mahan recorded his final birdie of the tournament on the 15th hole. The McKinney, Texas native closed out his round with a par on the 18th hole after bogeying the 17th for an inward nine of 37, one-over.
Mahan, who earned his invitation to the tournament after a runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur last summer, is the sixth OSU player to compete in the tournament as an amateur during head coach Mike Holder's tenure.
