Cowboy Wrestling Roasts Ducks, 33-5
April 18, 2003 | Cowboy Wrestling
"I though our effort was a lot better today," head coach John Smith said. "We made a lot of things happen and looked good overall. A little disappointed in the last match, giving up three takedowns in the last period.
"Outside of that we did well, after looking to comeback after yesterday," Smith said. "Not that we wrestled poor yesterday, but a little more enthused about what we wanted to do today."
The Cowboys took an early 3-0 lead when Johnny Thompson decisioned Jason Harless, 15-8. Harless would score his only offense in the first :30 of the match, recording a takedown and a two-point nearfall.
Thompson would then take over, recording five takedowns and a two-point nearfall with :16 left in the match to record the victory.
"You need to earn your respect out there," head coach John Smith said. "Some of those situations they just kind of held their positions instead of wrestling out of it. They are good to come from behind and with Johnny scoring 15 points, after being behind 4-0, that is something you always like to see."
Oregon's Casey Hunt stormed out to a 9-2 lead over Zack Esposito, in the first period. Hunt silenced the crowd after using a lateral drop with two nearfall points. Hunt would score two more takedowns in the first, but that would be it.
In the second period, Esposito electrified the crowd after using a lateral drop and flattening Hunt, pinning him in 3:36.
"He (Esposito) got in a little trouble and go a little over aggressive in a couple of positions," Smith said. "The good thing was he kept his head and got the escape. He went back to the same move that got him in trouble the first time, but that just shows his confidence."
Oregon was deducted a team point after Hunt threw his head gear on the ground after the match.
Shane Roller and Muhammed Lawal each recorded pins at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Roller pinned Chet McBhee in 2:15 to notch his second fall of the weekend, while Lawal garnered six takedowns before pinning Elias Soto in 2:54.
Brett Munson and Mike Christian each wrestled in their first dual of the year. Munson is a natural 165 pounder, but wrestled at 184 pounds and defeated Tony Rolen, 3-0, while Christian captured his first dual win of the season with an 8-3 decision over Neil Phillips.
Oregon's first team points came when Shane Webster decisioned Chad Reid, 7-3, at 174 pounds. The Ducks won the last match of the day, with Martin Mitchell recording two takedowns in the last period to send it into sudden victory against Skyler Holman.
Mitchell capitalized off of Holman's shot to record the takedown and victory.
The Cowboys return to action on Feb. 1 when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take on Northern Iowa.
