Oklahoma State Gets Past Nicholls State 5-2
April 17, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Leftfielder Scott Kirby was hit by a pitch and shortstop Chris Gutierrez walked before Virgil's one-out blast over the rightfield wall.
Gutierrez staked Oklahoma State (6-5) to a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run double off of Nicholls starter Matt Overman (3-1).
The Colonels battled back to tie the game with a run in the third, on a RBI single by Dustin Malbrough, and another run in the fifth courtesy of a wild pitch by reliever Shane Hawk.
Hawk (1-0) pitched four innings of scoreless relief with five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the year. Starter Spencer Grogan allowed two runs, one earned in five innings of work with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Gutierrez led OSU with two hits, while Virgil extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Cowboys went 2-0 against the Colonels (8-6) over this weekend of unscheduled make-up games.
