Esposito Nabs Big 12 Wrestler of Week Honors
April 16, 2003 | Cowboy Wrestling
Esposito helped the top-ranked Cowboys to a 26-9 win over Iowa State last Sunday in Ames, Iowa. He defeated then fourth-ranked and defending National Champion Aaron Holker.
The Three Bridges, N.J., native recorded a takedown late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second frame. At the start of the second period, Holker knotted up the score at 2-2 after recording an escape.
That would be Holker's final scoring of the match, as Esposito went on to dominate the third period, recording a reversal and a three-point nearfall to pick up the 8-2 decision.
The win marked the 10th victory over a ranked opponent this season, and improved his record to 19-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
He is currently ranked first in the latest Amateur Wrestling News rankings, and second in W.I.N. Magazine and InterMat.
Esposito's honor marked the second Cowboy wrestler to receive it in the five weeks the Big 12 has awarded the honor.
Senior Shane Roller notched the honors the first week of the season after defeating defending National Champion Luke Becker and helping the Cowboys whip up on Minnesota, 26-6.
The Cowboys return to action on Feb. 8 as they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 2 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
