Bedlam Hits the Mat for 144th Time
April 16, 2003 | Cowboy Wrestling
Top-ranked Oklahoma State and fourth-ranked Oklahoma square off at the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday at 7 p.m. The Cowboys have a lopsided advantage in the overall series, leading 111-24-9. OSU won the two meetings last year, 18-15 and 17-8.
Last Time Out
The Cowboys picked up their first conference win of the season after defeating Missouri, 34-6, in Stillwater last weekend. The Cowboys jumped out on the Tigers, winning the first seven matches. Freshman Zack Esposito electrified Gallagher-Iba Arena as he came roaring back from a 5-1 deficit to pin eighth-ranked J.P. Reese in 4:38, while Chris Pendleton recorded three takedowns before pinning Matt Turner in 5:49. Two-time All-American Tyrone Lewis notched five takedowns before recording the major decision over sixth-ranked Tyrone Woodley. With the win, the Cowboys remained undefeated against the Tigers, extending the all-time series to 29-0.
The Sooners
The Sooners are coming off the Oklahoma Open where four wrestlers captured individual titles. Junior heavyweight Leonce Crump and senior Tom Grossman (197 pounds) recorded their second Oklahoma Open championship while Bo Maynes (125 pounds) and Robbie Waller (174 pounds) both claimed their first. The Sooners had nine other grapplers place in the top four.
Esposito moves up the ranks
Esposito has been tearing up his competition, winning his first 10 matches of his college career. Esposito enters the dual ranked second by Amateur Wrestling News. During his first year as a starter, he has amassed a 10-0 record, while picking up tournament victories at the CMSU Open and the Kaufman-Brand Open. Esposito also picked up Outstanding Wrestler honors at the Kaufman-Brand.
Fallin' to victory
Three Cowboys have won the majority of their matches by fall. Chris Pendleton and Muhammed Lawal have recorded six wins each thus far with three of them coming by fall. In the 10 wins Zack Esposito has recorded, four of them have come by fall.
Takedown King
Last season Tyrone Lewis led the team in takedowns with 71. This year, he has amassed eight takedowns in two duals. With more than 11 duals left, Lewis will yet again be among the leaders in takedowns this year.
