Soccer Opens Big 12 Schedule
April 15, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
Oklahoma State's soccer team opens its Big 12 slate this Friday at 7 p.m., hosting Texas Tech at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls wrap up the weekend against Baylor on Sunday at 1 p.m.
After cruising through their non-conference schedule undefeated, Oklahoma State (8-0) has matched its win total from one year ago.
The Cowgirls are the second Big 12 team in the history of the conference to enter league play undefeated. Nebraska has accomplished the feat three times; in 1996, 1997 and 2000.
Texas Tech (2-6) won its first two games of the year before dropping its next six. Last week the Red Raiders fell to Idaho State, 1-0, and Florida Atlantic, 4-2. The Red Raiders are 1-1 on the road, with the win coming in the season-opener at Syracuse.
Baylor (6-2) split its games last week, defeating Northern Arizona, 2-0, and falling to Southern Methodist, 4-2. The Bears are 2-1 on the road, with the loss coming to Arizona State.
Texas Tech leads the all-time series with OSU, 4-2-0 after the Cowgirls picked up a 2-1 win in Stillwater last year.
Baylor also leads the series with Oklahoma State, holding a 5-0-1 advantage. Last year the Cowgirls traveled to Waco and lost, 3-2, in overtime.
Week in Review
Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to eight, snagging two shutout wins last week over Northeastern State and Drury.
After not scoring a goal since the opening weekend of the season, Kim Graves came up big against NSU, netting the game winner 16 minutes into the contest on an assist from Nikki Wojtowicz.
The Cowgirls had several opportunities to extend their lead, including two consecutive shots that hit the crossbar, but were forced to ride Graves' goal for much of the game.
With just under four minutes to play Carla Dolomont gave the Cowgirls the cushion they had been looking for all night, sending a shot into the upper net on an assist from Krista Dedmon.
In the Drury contest, Oklahoma State outshot the Panthers 7-0 in the first half of play, but was unable to take advantage and entered the locker room with nothing to show on the scoreboard.
In the second stanza, the offensive production came from two new sources, as Leah Carr and Joanne Edwards each scored their first goal of the season.
Carr scored the game winner at the 54:45 mark, taking a cross from Nikki Wojtowicz and heading the shot into the back of the net.
Nine minutes later, Edwards scored with a header of her own to give the Cowgirls some breathing room for the final 25 minutes. Jere Boykin gained her first assist of the season on the play.
