Soccer Heads To Iowa
April 15, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
Oklahoma State's soccer team enters the second week of Big 12 action undefeated for the first time in program history and at 10-0 overall and 2-0 in conference games, the Cowgirls have earned their first appearance in the regional rankings. Soccer Buzz has placed OSU in a three-way tie for ninth with Missouri and UTEP.
The Cowgirls hit the road for their next conference match-up, heading north to Iowa to face the Cyclones at 4 p.m. on Friday at the ISU Soccer Complex.
Oklahoma State returns home for its final non-conference test this season, hosting East Central for a 7 p.m. tilt on Monday at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Iowa State enters the contest at 3-5-1 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 action. The Cyclones will be looking to pick up their first Big 12 win after falling to nationally ranked Texas A&M and Texas last weekend. A&M outscored ISU, 4-2, on Friday and Texas blanked the Cyclones, 7-0, on Sunday.
The Cyclones started the season 3-0, but have dropped their last five contests.
The series with Iowa State is tied 2-2-2. After winning the first two meetings with the Cyclones, the Cowgirls dropped the next two and tied the last two, including a 1-1 draw in Stillwater last year.
East Central is off to a 4-2-2 start, after picking up a win and a tie over the weekend. The Tigers defeated St. Edwards, 3-2, and tied with St. Mary's, 2-2. ECU opens its conference schedule on Tuesday before visiting the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State leads the series with East Central 1-0-0. The teams met for the first time last year and the Cowgirls emerged with a 3-1 win.
Week in Review
In Friday's contest with Texas Tech, Oklahoma State held a narrow 6-5 shot advantage after the first period of play, but the Cowgirl offense caught fire in the second stanza, out shooting the Red Raiders 10-3.
Defender Marcela Nová broke the stalemate 20 minutes into the period, snagging her first goal of the season on a double assist from Nikki Wojtowicz and Courtney Robb.
The game remained tense until the 82nd minute when Oklahoma State received help from an unlikely source, the Texas Tech defense.
Jolene Schweitzer made a break for the goal and had her shot deflected, but Red Raider defender Roxanne Frilot knocked the ball over the goal line to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 win.
Midway through the first period against Baylor, the Cowgirls were looking for a spark and it came in the form of Jere Boykin. Shortly after entering the game, Boykin took a corner from Nikki Wojtowicz and battled until her shot found the back of the net.
Oklahoma State rode the one goal lead until the 81:57 mark when Boykin snagged her second goal of the game.
The Denver, Colo., native took a feed from Cassie Lewis and made a break down the field. Baylor's goalkeeper then came out to challenge Boykin but she out-maneuvered her for the goal and final 2-0 margin.
