Soccer Continues Conference Play
April 15, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
Oklahoma State hits the road for its second consecutive Big 12 road trip to face Kansas and Missouri this weekend. The Cowgirls will square off against the Jayhawks at 4 p.m. on Friday and wrap up the road swing with Missouri on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kansas leads the series with Oklahoma State 3-1-2. The Jayhawks scored three first period goals in Stilwater last year en route to picking up the 5-3 win. The Cowgirls have not beaten the Jayhawks since 1997 when OSU won 1-0 in Lawrence. Missouri holds a commanding 6-0 lead of the series with Oklahoma State, including a 3-2 win last year in Columbia. The Tigers have shut out the Cowgirls twice, in 1999 and 2000.
Scouting Kansas
Kansas enters the contest at 8-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Big 12 action. The Jayhawks opened conference play with a 5-1 blowout of Colorado and a tie with thenNo. 18 Nebraska, 1-1. Kansas then fell to Baylor, 2-1, and slid past Texas Tech, 2-1 on the road. Freshman Caroline Smith leads the team and the Big 12 with 10 gaols and three assists. Sophomore Meghan Miller has posted three shutouts in goal and holds a 0.96 goals-against average.

Iowa State In Review
Oklahoma State's soccer squad suffered its first defeat of the season against Iowa State, falling, 2-1, in Ames. Ten minutes proved to be the downfall of the Cowgirls undefeated season, as Iowa State scored a goal in the opening and closing minutes of the contest. Oklahoma State evened the score 12 minutes into the first period when Jere Boykin scored her third goal in two games. The junior upped her season goal total to a team-leading six and pulled the Cowgirls within one on an unassisted goal at the 15:51 mark. But, it would not be enough and the Cyclones picked up their first conference win with a goal in the waning minutes of the contest.
East Central In Review
Unhappy with the loss to Iowa State, the Cowgirls came out with a vengeance against East Central on Monday. Kim Graves got things started with a goal just over one minute into the game on a feed from Courtney Robb. Ten minutes later Nikki Wojtowicz scored her first goal of the season and after an 18 minute dry spell, Joanne Edwards took an assist from Jere Boykin to extend the lead to 3-0 at half. The onslaught continued in the second stanza, as OSU found the back of the net 16 seconds into the stanza and doubled its half time lead in the first 20 minutes. The formidable duo of Boykin and Wojtowicz, team goal and assist leaders, teamed up for the score at the 45:16 mark. Edwards tripled her season goal total nine minutes later on an assist from Dedmon. The junior had just one goal entering the game with the Lady Tigers, but finished the game with three. Cowgirl defenders Marcela Nová and Jeni Jackson teamed up for the sixth and final goal of the night in the 73rd minute. Nová scored her second goal of the season on Jackson's second assist of the year.
Head Coach Karen Hancock
Karen Hancock is in her seventh year at Oklahoma State, having started the program in 1996. She picked up her 50th win at OSU against Northeastern State and her 75th career win against East Central. In six years at OSU, Hancock holds a 54-63-8 record. Hancock led the 2002 squad to a 10-0 start, the best ever by a Cowgirl team and OSU upped its win total to 11 against East Central to set a school record for season wins.
Schweitzer Snags Honor
Sophomore forward Jolene Schweitzer was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 9. Schweitzer scored five points in OSU's two wins against Louisiana-Lafayette and Stephen F. Austin, snagging the game winner in both contests. When honored, Schweitzer led the Cowgirls with five goals and 12 points, after pacing the squad with eight goals during the 2001 season.
Doud Does It All
Senior goalkeeper Kat Doud was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 23. Doud earned the honor after opening Big 12 play with a pair of shutouts in wins over Texas Tech and Baylor. At the time, Doud had given up just three goals in 843 minutes to lead the Big 12 with a 0.32 goals-against average.
Nová Brings In Two
Sophomore defender Marcela Nová was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week and the Soccer America Team of the Week for her play during the opening weekend of Big 12 action. Nová plays a critical role in the Cowgirl backfield that gave up just six shots on goal while shutting out Baylor and Texas Tech, 2-0. The sophomore also scored her first goal of the season against Tech, netting the game winner midway through the second period.
Wojtowicz Nears The Top
Sophomore midfielder Nikki Wojtowicz leads the Cowgirls and the Big 12 with 11 assists in 12 games. She holds a 0.91 assists-per-game average, good for second in the country and is just six touches shy of taking over the top spot in career assists in her second season at OSU.
Hinton Shines In Relief
Goalkeeper Jackie Hinton earned the first start of her collegiate career against East Central. The freshman played the first 56 minutes and recorded one save.
Boykin Gets It Done
Junior Jere Boykin leads the Cowgirls with seven goals, including four in the last three games. The forward came off the bench to score both goals in the Baylor contest and lift Oklahoma State to victory. She also added a goal against Iowa State and East Central and has scored in three of the last four contests.
Cowgirls Shatter The Records
Oklahoma State's 2002 squad continues to break into the record books, most recently with its 38 shots against East Central. The previous high was 37 against Oklahoma Christian in 1996. The contest with the Tigers also marked another mileston. It was the seventh shutout for the Cowgirls this year, eclipsing the previous high of six set in 1997.
OSU Claims Bragging Rights
Oklahoma State captured the title at the 2002 Mazzio's Oklahoma Shootout, defeating Oral Roberts and Tulsa, 3-1. The win over Tulsa, Head Coach Karen Hancock's alma mater was the first in program history. Oklahoma also went 2-0, but the Cowgirls edged the Sooners by a one point goal differential for the championship. Four Cowgirls; Leah Carr, Krista Dedmon, Kat Doud and Kim Graves were named to the all-tournament squad.
Cowgirls In Spain
Prior to the 2002 season, Oklahoma State spent 10 days training in Spain. The Cowgirls played three games against international competition, posting two shutouts and finishing the tour undefeated. The Cowgirls also met the Sunderland A.F.C Under 23 Regional Team and members of the Swedish and Irish National Teams.
Smooth Sailing At Home
Oklahoma State is 7-0 at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex and has outscored opponents 22-1 on its home turf. The Cowgirls have an eight-game streak dating back to the Arkansas Little Rock contest last November. OSU has posted six shutouts in Stillwater and has not surrendered a goal since the Western Kentucky game on Sept. 2.
