Men's Golf Places Two on All-America Team
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
Howell is OSU's NCAA-leading 43rd first-team All-American and the 10th in the 1990s -- but just the team's second in the last four years. His honor, along with Loar's, gives OSU 124 All-Americans in its men's golf history.
Howell, who has led OSU in stroke average for the past two seasons, placed fifth at last week's NCAA Men's Golf Championship, giving OSU its best individual finish at the national tournament since 1995. Howell lost in a playoff at Monday's U.S. Open qualifier in Atlanta and is the first alternate out of that site.
Loar, who struggled and was in 140th place after one round at the national tourney, recovered midway through the second round and finished 39th. His four medalist honors rank him 11th in school history in that category.
The Cowboys finished second at this year's national tournament, marking OSU's best finish since the national championship season of 1995. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Tournament six straight times and has finished out of the top five just twice in the past 30 years.
