Mahan Advances at U.S. Amateur Golf
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
OSU junior Landry Mahan won his third-round match today to advance to Friday's quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Mahan defeated Travis McCoy 3 and 2 in Thursday afternoon's competition. His quarterfinal opponent, however, will not be teammate Charles Howell but rather former UNLV star Bill Lunde. Lunde defeated Howell 3 and 2 to end the Cowboy sophomore's Amateur run.
Mahan is trying to become the fourth OSU golfer to win the U.S. Amateur but the first since Scott Verplank won the 1984 title.
The Amateur Championship can be seen live on ESPN from 2 to 4 p.m. NBC will have live coverage on Saturday and Sunday.
The OSU men's golf season opens Sept. 28-29, when the Cowboys compete in the Preview tournament at Hazeltine Country Club in Minneapolis.
