Hunter Mahan Moves Into U.S. Amateur Championship Match
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
With the win, the McKinney, Texas, native will take on Arizona's Ricky Barnes in tomorrow's 36-hole final. The duo will tee off at 9 a.m. on the 6,988-yard, par-70 layout.
Mahan fell behind on the first hole of play after Bray opened with a birdie. However, the Cowboy junior quickly rebounded with back-to-back birdies of his own on Nos. 2 and 3 to jump out in front.
Mahan held his lead until Bray birdied the par-4 eighth to square the match. The two players remained even until Mahan reeled off two mores birdies on the 11th and 12th holes to go out in front by a 2-up margin.
Bray got one back on the 13th hole after Mahan suffered his first bogey of the day, but could get no closer as the two players halved the remaining five holes to close out the match.
Mahan, who earned an invitation to compete in the 2003 Masters next April with his semifinal victory, is the first OSU player to reach the finals since Trip Kuehne in 1994 and will be looking to join Tiger Woods as the only players to ever win a U.S. Junior and U.S. Amateur championship.
