Hunter Mahan Advances to Second Round at U.S. Amateur
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
Wanner took an early 1-up lead after Mahan bogeyed the par-5 second hole. However, the Cowboy junior won four of the next five holes with a pair of birdies and two pars to build a 3-hole cushion.
A bogey at the par-4 eighth by Mahan brought Wanner within two, but he would get no closer.
Both players parred the ninth, keeping Mahan two clear of the Demon Deacon senior at the turn before a birdie at the 10th hole and an eagle on the 561-yard, par-5 12th gave Mahan a 4-up advantage.
The McKinney, Texas, native recorded pars over the next three holes to close out the match.
With the win, Mahan, who won the 1999 U.S. Junior Amateur title, advances to Thursday's round of 32 and will take on John Merrick at 8:50 a.m.
The 2002 Big 12 Player of the Year advanced to the match play portion of the tournament after posting scores of 70 and 71, one-over-par, during the event's 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday.
