April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
OSU golfers Charles Howell and Landry Mahan opened play Monday in the U.S. Amateur Championship, and each is within range of advancing to match play.
Howell shot an even-par opening round of 70 at Oak Hill Country Club's 6,908-yard East Course, while Mahan carded a 72. Seven players, including Hank Kuehne, the brother of former OSU All-American Trip Kuehne, are tied for the medalist lead with first-round 68s.
The championship continues Tuesday with a second round of stroke play. After Tuesday's round, the field will be pared from 312 competitors to 64 who will advance to match play.
The OSU men's golf season opens Sept. 28-29, when the Cowboys compete in the Preview tournament at Hazeltine Country Club in Minneapolis.
