Golfers Continue to Shine at U.S. Amateur
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
Landry Mahan won his second-round match at the U.S. Amateur Championship on the 20th hole to join OSU teammate Charles Howell in the round of 16.
Howell defeated Ryan Lavoie 5 and 4 in today's morning round and will face UNLV star Bill Lunde this afternoon. Mahan was extended to two extra holes by his opponent, Tim Jackson, but won 1-up and advanced to play Travis McCoy.
Should both Howell and Mahan win this afternoon, the teammates would square off Friday in a quarterfinal match.
Three OSU golfers have won the U.S. Amateur Championship, but none have accomplished the feat since Scott Verplank's victory in 1984. Before Verplank's triumph, Labron Harris, Jr., (1961) and Bob Dickson (1967) had won the prestigious tournament.
ESPN begins today's live coverage of the event at 3 p.m. CDT.
