OSU men's golf student-athletes Charles Howell and Landry Mahan each advanced to match play when the second round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Championship was completed this morning.
Howell's two-under par score of 137 was good for second place in stroke play, one stroke behind medalist Joel Kribel, while Mahan finished tied for 33rd with a four-over 143. A total of 312 golfers began competition Monday; stroke play pared the field to the top 64.
The first round of match play began Wednesday afternoon. Mahan, a native of Richardson, Texas, was set to tee off against Patrick Carter, a Lesage, W.Va., native who carded a 142 in stroke play, at 12:22 p.m. CDT, while Howell, from Augusta, Ga., was to meet Australia's Cameron Percy, the second-to-last person to qualify for match play, at 2:30 p.m.
