Cowboys Lead Preseason Men's Golf Rankings
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
OSU, which finished first in last year's final Rolex Collegiate Rankings, edged second-ranked Clemson in the preseason MasterCard Collegiate Rankings, which were compiled through voting by the nation's coaches.
In addition to the team rank, OSU placed two individuals in the national top 10. Senior Bo Van Pelt, who finished 15th at last year's NCAA Championship after winning the Central Regional, is ranked third overall. Teammate Edward Loar, who last season became the first true freshman at OSU to win a tournament in 13 years, is ranked 10th. In addition, a Cowboy newcomer, true freshman Charles Howell, received seven vote points, which would have placed him 33rd had the poll been carried out past the top 25.
OSU opens its 1997-98 season Sept. 19-20 when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the Tucker Invitational. In addition to Loar and Van Pelt, the Cowboys return 1996-97 regular Landry Mahan, and Howell is expected to be joined in the team's lineup by fellow freshman Boyd Summerhays.
The MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, the official rankings for the Rolex Collegiate Tour, are compiled by GolfStat. The rankings will chart the top 50 teams and 100 individuals in the nation and the top five teams and top 10 individuals from each region. The next rankings will be released Sept. 17.
