Cowboy Golfer Reaches Semifinals at U.S. Amateur
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboy junior fell behind early after Liaw birdied the first hole and remained one down before reeling off wins on four consecutive holes to take a 3-up lead at the turn.
Mahan squared the match on the sixth hole with a par before posting his first birdie off the day on the par-4 seventh to grab the lead. Pars on Nos. 8 and 9 coupled with back-to-back bogies by Liaw gave Mahan his three-hole cushion.
After a Liaw birdie at the 10th cut the lead to two, Mahan answered with a birdie of his own on the par-4 11th to stretch the advantage back to three.
The McKinney, Texas, native recorded a par on the 16th hole to secure the win and move into tomorrow's showdown with North Carolina's Dustin Bray. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship match.
Mahan is the first OSU player to reach the semifinals since a pair of Cowboys, Kris Cox and Trip Kuehne, met for a berth in the 1994 final.
