Cowboy Golf Set to Open Spring Season in Arizona
April 15, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
The 54-hole event will be played at The Raven at Sabino Springs, a par 71, 6,900-yard layout, with 36 holes being contested on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning. The Cowboys, who begin the season ranked behind Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, are one of seven nationally-ranked squads taking part in the 20-team field.
OSU will be led by a pair of All-Americans, senior Anders Hultman and sophomore Hunter Mahan. Hultman, a first-team selection a year ago, posted a team-best stroke average of 70.83 during the fall season and will be looking for his first win this year.
Mahan, who earned second-team honors last year at Southern California, earned his first victory as a Cowboy in October, claiming medalist honors at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate while helping OSU to the team title.
Sophomore Pär Nilsson, a 2001 honorable mention All-America pick, and junior J.C. DeLeon will also be in the Cowboy rotation. Freshman Alex Norén, a Stockholm, Sweden, native, rounds out the lineup and will be making his first career start.
