OSU Goes Through 100-Play Scimmage
April 14, 2003 | Cowboy Football
The scrimmage, moved back from Saturday night because of the potential for thunderstorms, featured a stingy defense and a gritty performance by freshman tailback Vernand Morency.
Morency, fellow newcomer Greg Gold and veteran Greg Jones rotated through the tailback spot with Tatum Bell (ankle) and Seymore Shaw (leg) sitting out.
Second-year head coach Les Miles had strong praise for his defensive unit after the scrimmage. "I don't think there will be many times during the year our offense will lineup up against a better defense than the one they have faced during two-a-days," Miles said.
Morency had 10 carries for 48 yards, including a long of 20 yards. "If he comes to play, he's a pretty good back," Miles said. "You've got to remember, he's been playing pro baseball and hasn't played football in a number of years. He's just now getting acclimated but he's a pretty good back."
On the defensive side, linebacker Terrence Robinson and Justin Deason led the team with five tackles. Each also had one tackle for minus yardage. Defensive backs Ricklan Holmes-Miller and Chris Massey had four tackles each as did linebacker Paul Duren.
"We saw a lot of different phases of our offense, defense and special teams," Miles said. "We got in a lot of good work and saw some things we have to get better at but, overall, it was a productive day."
Quarterback Josh Fields completed five of 13 passes for 62 yards while Aso Pogi completed six of 17 for 70 yards. The two combined for three touchdowns.
The Cowboys will take both Sunday and Monday off from practice but resume preseason workouts Tuesday.
