Luke Phillips On Lou Groza Watch List
April 14, 2003 | Cowboy Football
The list was announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission, sponsor of the annual award. The kickers on the list were chosen based on statistics from the 2001 season and on preseason expectations.
Phillips, a junior from Tulsa (Metro Christian), was 15 of 17 a year ago in field goal attempts and was perfect on 27 extra point tries. He led the Cowboys in scoring with 72 points and was fourth in the NCAA among kickers with at least 15 attempts. His season and collegiate career long field goal was 52 yards which he nailed twice in OSU's 16-13 win over Oklahoma in the 2001 season finale.
Phillips is a preseason first team All-Big 12 selection after landing second team all-league honors by both the Associated Press and Big 12 coaches a year ago.
OSU's outstanding kicker is one of four Big 12 players on the Lou Groza Watch list. The 2002 Lou Groza Award will be presented on December 10, 2002, in West Palm Beach, Florida.
