Cowboys Cruise Past Oklahoma, 30-7
April 14, 2003 | Cowboy Football
The Cowboys (7-2, 4-2 Big 12 South) won for just the 13th time in the series but for the second time in the last three years. It was the biggest victory for Oklahoma State in the intrastate rivalry since a 47-0 rout in Norman back in 1945.
"Beating OU is big for me and big for the program," said Cowboys coach Bob Simmons. "Beating your in-state always leaves you feeling good."
Oklahoma State maintained a share of first in the Big 12 South Division with Texas A&M. Despite the fact Texas Tech also is in the hunt for the division title, the school announced it would not accept a bowl bid due to academic violations found by the NCAA.
The Sooners (3-7, 1-5 South) struggled on offense for the third straight week. Oklahoma has been outscored 125-21 in its last three games, losing to Kansas and Nebraska before this setback.
Oklahoma took a 7-0 lead on a nine-yard run by quarterback Brandon Daniels late in the first quarter before the Cowboys reeled off 30 unanswered points in the final three periods.
Sydnes drew Oklahoma State within 7-3 on a 42-yard field goal before Lindsay hooked up with Sean Love on a 16-yard TD pass with 21 seconds left in the first half. State successfully recovered an onsides kick, and Sydnes booted a 36-yard field goal with two seconds to go for a 13-3 halftime advantage.
Lindsay fired a 40-yard scoring strike to R.W. McQuarters with 2:05 to play in the third quarter to cap a six-play, 76-yard drive. Sydnes drilled a 32-yard field goal less than five minutes into the fourth period before Daunte Hill capped the scoring with a two-yard run with 26 seconds to play.
Tailback Jamaal Fobbs had 122 yards on 18 carries and Lindsay completed 9-of-16 passes for 129 yards for Oklahoma State, which had 317 yards of total offense.
"Coach Simmons wanted us to run the football and control the game," said Fobbs. "We worked all week on that. We knew we could run the ball. It was really tough early, but as the day progressed, it got easier."
Oklahoma had just 198 yards of total offense and Daniels was 4-of-9 for 52 yards.
