Cowboy Golf Finishes Third at U.S. Collegiate
April 10, 2003 | Cowboy Golf
The Cowboys' 863, one-under-par tournament total was two strokes behind runner-up Arizona and four shots behind tournament champion Texas.
OSU sophomore Hunter Mahan picked up his third win of the season, posting a three-under 69 during his final round to finish with a 12-under score of 204. The McKinney, Texas, native finished two strokes ahead of Arizona's Chris Nallen.
With the win, Mahan tied the school record for wins in a season by a sophomore held by Kevin Wentworth, Scott Verplank and Tom Jones.
Pär Nilsson turned in a solid outing as well for the Cowboys, breaking par for the second time in the tournament with a final-round 71. The sophomore's 54-hole total of 216 gave him sole possession of eighth place and his first top-10 finish of the season.
A trio of players; senior Anders Hultman and freshmen Dayton Rose and Alex Norén, all carded 73s on Sunday to round out the OSU lineup.
Hultman and Rose tied with two other players for 30th place with a three-day total of 223, while Norén finished three strokes behind the duo in a four-way tie for 41st.
The Cowboys will return to action on April 12 when they travel to Tempe, Ariz., for the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
