Alexandra Lindquist
April 10, 2003 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
Lindquist came in for the womens cross country team in 1998. In her first year on the team she helped the Cowgirls to a sixth place finish in the Big 12 by finishing fifth herself. Her performance in the meet earned her the recognition of being the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Lindquist went on to finish 25th in the Midwest Regional and helped the Cowgirls earn an at-large bid for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Lawrence, Kan. The Cowgirls competed at nationals for the first time since 1989 and Lindquist was a big part of that team that went on to finish 20th in the nation.
Lindquists success carried over into the indoor track season in the winter of 1999. She won the mile at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in Manhattan, Kan. and her time of 4:47.76 qualified her for the NCAA meet. She is still the last Cowgirl individual to win a Big 12 title. Lindquist also part of the Big 12 champion distance medley relay team that set a school record. She bettered her time at nationals by running a mile in 4:46.70, but only managed an 11th place finish.
What makes Lindquist even more remarkable is that she suffers from chronic stress fractures in her feet. This debilitating problem has made it tough for her to run and train on a consistent basis. She was limited during the 1999 cross country season and the 2000 track season.
Lindquist returned for the 2000 cross country season with a bang. She finished seventh in the Cowboy Jamboree and went on to qualify for nationals as an individual by placing sixth at the Midwest Regional. Lindquist finished 76th at nationals, which was an improvement from her 111th place finish in 1998.
Lindquist continued her cross country success in 2001. She helped lead the Cowgirls to a runner-up showing at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Norman, Okla. and the first district title in school history. The district title meant Lindquist would compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the third time in her career.
Lindquist will finish one of the most impressive four year careers in school history. She has one more year to add to her credentials that still lacks an All-American plaque.
