BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Oklahoma State junior Hunter Mahan has been named the first recipient of the Southern Golf Association's new National Amateur of the Month for his exceptional play in March.
The McKinney, Texas native closed with a 65 at the Morris Williams Invitational on March 18 to post his first victory of the year with a 14-under-par total of 202. Mahan's triumph also helped the Cowboys to their third consecutive team title of the spring.
Earlier in the month, Mahan's final-round 67 propelled him into a tie for sixth and helped OSU surge past host Nevada-Las Vegas to win the Toyota Men's Collegiate Championship. He also fueled OSU's first victory of the season with a 67 during his final round at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 25.
On Monday, Mahan claimed the top spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index ratings, while the Cowboys currently stand in eighth in the team rankings.
The new monthly SGA award, open to amateurs of all ages, is determined by a blue-ribbon selection panel of national golf officials, golf journalists and college coaches. The award will be doled out March through October. The venerable SGA stages the prestigious Southern Amateur Golf Championship, the 97th playing of which will be in July at The Homestead, Virginia, site of next year's NCAA Championship.
