Tampa, Fla. - Cowgirl senior Lauren Bay struck out 10 batters en route to MVP honors as the Oklahoma State softball team defeated 12th-ranked Stanford, 3-1, in the finals of the Speedline Invitational here Sunday afternoon. The tournament title is the first for OSU since 1995.
Oklahoma State advanced to the finals following a 2-0 victory over Purdue in the semifinals. Sarah Seagraves struck out five while throwing the two-hit shutout. It took eight innings to put away the Boilermakers, but in the first extra frame, Ashleigh Tweed scored on a double by Megan Carey, who was promply replaced by pinch runner Lacy Darity. Darity then scored on a base hit by Bay.
It took the Cowgirls no time at all to score in the finals as OSU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first against the No. 12 Cardinal. After a trio of errors by Stanford's defense, Cowgirl senior Stephanie Hodges added two runs to the scoreboard on a two-out single. That was all OSU needed as Stanford could produce just one run in the bottom of the fourth.
Bay, who improved her record to 10-3 overall, was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while catcher Ryan Realmuto and Carey also earned all-tournament team accolades. The Cowgirls are now 17-6 on the year.
