TAMPA, Fla. - Oklahoma State's eight-game winning streak came to an end here Thursday at the Speedline Invitational as the Cowgirls dropped a pair of one-run contests to UT-Chattanooga and Michigan State. Both teams staged come-from-behind rallies to defeat Oklahoma State, 2-1 and 6-5, respectively.
In the opening game of the day, neither OSU or UT-Chattanooga was able to muster much offense until the Cowgirls pushed a run home in the bottom of the sixth.
Erika Ennis, pinch running for Jade Lindly, scored the go-ahead run on a single from Calli Behmer, OSU's third hit of the game.
The lead did not last long as the Lady Mocs had an answer in the following frame, using the only extra-base hit of the contest to bring in two runs for the lead and the win.
Lauren Bay (6-3) was saddled with the loss despite posting her sixth double-digit strikeout game of the year, fanning 15 Lady Mocs. Bay allowed two runs on three hits and walked one.
The ending of game two was eerily similar to the first as Oklahoma State surrendered four runs in the bottom of the seventh and watched a three-run cushion disappear.
The Cowgirls jumped on the Spartans early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Megan Carey earned the RBI's, bringing in Stephanie Nicholson and Brooke Siebel after both drew walks to get on base.
The lead did not last long as MSU evened the score in the bottom of the frame with a double.
It looked as if Oklahoma State had taken control of the game in the third when Brooke Siebel sent a two-run dinger to right center. The Cowgirls then increased their lead to three in the top of the seventh when Ashleigh Tweed scored on a sacrifice fly from Carey.
It was not to be and once again the final inning of play doomed the Cowgirls as four runs crossed the plate. A series of three consecutive walks, a dropped fly ball and a double gave Michigan State the firepower needed to steal the win.
Sarah Seagraves earned the start against the Spartans, surrendering two runs in five innings of work. Brooke Siebel (1-2) picked up the loss, coming on in relief in the sixth.
Oklahoma State (11-5) will look to get back on the winning track on Friday, facing Maryland and Florida Atlantic on day two at the Speedline Invitational.
