STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team improved to 11-3 on the year and extended its winning streak to eight on Tuesday, defeating UMKC 3-0 and 3-1.
Lauren Bay fanned a season-high 16 batters en route to setting a new career strikeout record at Oklahoma State in the first game of the day. It took just six batters for the lefty to shatter the record as UMKC's Jenny Schade became Bay's 775th victim in the batter's box, surpassing the old record of 774 held by Melanie Roche since 1993.
Megan Carey had a hand in all three of OSU's runs in opening game. Carey put the Cowgirls on top in the second with a solo home run to left field, her second long ball of the year.
The left fielder also earned the RBI in the fourth, bringing in Ryan Realmuto with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the sixth it was Carey's turn to score as she crossed home plate on a single from Stephanie Hodges for the final run of the game.
In addition to the record-setting strikeout performance, Bay scattered two hits and walked one batter while picking up her third shutout of the year.
The Cowgirls took an early lead in the nightcap, posting two runs in the first inning and holding on for the win.
Stephanie Nicholson led off the inning with a walk and scored on a balk by UMKC's Jenny Schade. Carey then scored on a botched a throw to first from catcher Kari Thurman to up the margin to 2-0.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Alliya Anderson doubled to left center and rounded the bases on a base hit from Afton Burris.
UMKC put together a short rally in the sixth, scoring one run on three hits, but it was not enough.
Sarah Seagraves picked up the win on the mound, striking out three and giving up one run on seven hits.
Oklahoma State (11-3) returns to action on Thursday, facing UT-Chattanooga and Michigan State at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
