Cowboy Wrestling Leads After First Round

Oklahoma State's wrestling team scored 19.5 points in the first round of the NCAA Championships in Kansas City, Mo., to take a three and a half point lead over the next closest team, Lehigh.
Tyrone Lewis recorded the Cowboys' lone fall in the first session, while a trio of other wrestlers notched major decisions. Chris Pendleton cruised to an 18-3 technical fall in the second period to put OSU in front of the pack.
Lewis came out soaring, recording three takedowns to take a 6-3 lead over Bill Boeh of Duquesne heading into the second period. The El Reno, Okla., native scored an escape before taking Boeh to the mat to record the fall in 3:25.
Pendleton manhandled Wisconsin's Brady Reinke, scoring a takedown, four three-point nearfalls and a reversal in the first period to take a 16-2 lead. Reinke scored an escape to start the second before Pendleton notched his second takedown to record the technical fall.
Shane Roller blitzed Mike Patrovich of Hofstra, scoring three takedowns and a pair of three-point nearfalls en route to a 12-2 major decision.
Johnny Thompson shutout Wisconsin's Tom Clum, 8-0, while Muhammed Lawal cruised to a 13-3 major decision over Eric Mausser of Clarion.
Zack Esposito, Jerrod Sanders and Jake Rosholt all notched decisions for the Cowboys.
Skyler Holman was knocked off by Cleveland State's Rocco Mansueto, 6-6 in the tiebreaker, while Will Gruenwald lost by fall to Ohio State's defending National Champion Tommy Rowlands.
The evening session is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Kemper Arena.
