STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State swept New Mexico State on Friday in softball action, posting a pair of shutouts over the Aggies to improve to 20-6 overall. The Cowgirls run-ruled the Aggies 9-0 in game one and won the second contest 5-0.
The second inning was the downfall of New Mexico State in the first game. The defense committed two errors and pitcher, Anita Knight, walked two batters and hit one to allow the Cowgirls to push three runs across the plate without connecting for a single hit.
The lead was upped to six in the third when the Cowgirls sticks got hot. Megan Carey started the rally with a long ball down the left field line. Ryan Realmuto followed with a base hit and made it home on a double from Lauren Bay. Bay then moved to third on a sacrifice and home on another Aggie error.
The Cowgirls added one run in the fourth on a base hit from Carey to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Afton Burris provided the game-ending hit in the bottom of the fifth, a two-run dinger that enforced the mercy rule.
Sarah Seagraves (8-0) threw a no-hitter for four innings, facing the minimum while fanning eight batters before Cami Carter came on in relief. Carter struck out one and surrendered one hit in one inning.
The Cowgirls again posted three runs in the third in the second game of the day, this time using three hits and one Aggie error.
Crystal Lee hit her second home run of the season, sending it crashing off the scoreboard in right field.
With two outs, Lacy Darity laid down a bunt on the third baseline and stole second to move into scoring position. It looked as if the inning would end but NMS's center fielder dropped the catch, allowing Darity to score and Nicholson to gain first. Calli Behmer then singled to score Nicholson for the final run of the inning.
Oklahoma State pushed the lead to four in the third when Heather Been scored on a passed ball. Nicholson rounded out the scoring in the game with a home run that also bounced off the scoreboard.
Cami Carter (1-1) picked up her first win of the season, throwing four innings in relief. Bay earned the start, fanning four and giving up one hit in three innings.
Oklahoma State opens conference play on Sunday, hosting Kansas for a 2 p.m. contest at Cowgirl Stadium.
