TUCSON, Ariz.- Minnesota wrapped out 12 hits and withstood a late Oklahoma State rally to defeat the Cowboys 7-6 in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Sancet Field.
The Golden Gophers scored a run in the first and three runs in the third to take a 4-0 early lead.
The Cowboys scored three runs in the third inning to cut the Minnesota lead to 4-3. Kenny Hansley started the rally with a triple and scored on a single by leftfielder Ryan Olivo. Centerfielder Jose Virgil followed with a triple of his own and scored on a RBI single by third baseman Josh Fields.
The Golden Gophers knocked OSU starter Scott Baker out of the game in the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning to push their lead up to 7-3. Baker (1-2) allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
OSU cut the UM advantage in half with a two-run homer by first baseman John Urick in the bottom of the fifth, the Cowboys first round-tripper of the season.
The Pokes scored a run in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by pinch-hitter Mario Matulich to make it 7-6. The rally was cut short, however, when pinch-hitter Scott Kirby struck out with runners on first and second.
