Bedlam hits Mat for 145th time
Oklahoma State and Oklahoma hits the mat for the 145th time. The Cowboys host the Sooners on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. OSU enters the dual with an eight-dual win streak on the line, with its last win coming in the first-place match at the National Duals. OSU also won earlier this year in Norman 23-16.
On Oklahoma
The Sooners are coming off a 27-19 loss to Iowa State last weekend. Oklahoma competed without Tom Grossman and All-Americans Witt Durden and Josh Lambrecht. True-freshman Teyon Ware defeated defending 141-pound National Champion Aaron Holker for the second time this season, 9-3. Ware's other victory came at the National Duals when he downed Holker 3-1. Bo Maynes, Ware, Rafael Maturino, Robbie Waller all recorded decisions for the Sooners, while Jake Hager received a forfeit. OU is coached by Jack Spates and returns three All-Americans in Witt Durden, Robbie Waller and Josh Lambrecht.
Last Time Out
Oklahoma State's wrestling team moved to 15-0 on the year after dismantling No. 17 Nebraska, 34-6, Saturday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Zack Esposito started the scoring spree after pinning Dusty Spaulding. The Three Bridges, N.J., native recorded a takedown before using a lateral drop to put Spaulding on his back, flattening him in 2:00.
After Esposito's pin, OSU reeled off five straight wins to take a 25-0 lead heading into the 197-pound match.
OSU notched two straight bonus-point wins when Shane Roller pinned Nate McMillin in 2:19, and Tyrone Lewis notched five takedowns before recording the 13-2 major decision over Jacob Klein.
Johnny Thompson closed out the night by pinning Joey Malia in 2:11. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native captured a takedown and a three-point nearfall before locking up the guillotine for the fall.
Nebraska's third-ranked Justin Ruiz notched the Husker's first team points after a 5-3 decision over second-ranked Muhammed Lawal. The Huskers' Jason Powell recorded the other victory after using a late third-period takedown to take the 4-2 decision over Skyler Holman.
Gruenwald recorded a takedown with 1:11 left in the match to take the 5-3 decision over Mitch Mansteadt. With the win, Gruenwald moved to 2-3 in the conference.
Jerrod Sanders, Chris Pendleton and Jake Rosholt all recorded decisions for the Cowboys.
Four Cowboys have 20+ wins
Four Cowboys enter this week's dual with at least 20 wins this season. Zack Esposito and Chris Pendleton enter the dual with 20 wins each, while Shane Roller and Muhammed Lawal each have 21 wins. Esposito and Pendleton each notched their 20th win after picking up wins against Dusty Spaulding and Travis Pascoe, respectively. Esposito pinned Spaulding in 2:00 and Pendleton decisioned Pascoe, 13-8. Roller captured his 20th win after defeating Nathan Meyer of Iowa State, 8-5. Lawal captured 20 and 21 after defeating Sean Stender of Northern Iowa, 5-4, and Iowa State's Woodley Milford, 25-10.
Cowboys in the Rankings
All 10 Cowboy wrestlers are ranked individually by Amateur Wrestling News, with eight of them being ranked in the top 10. Esposito remains atop the rankings this week, while Johnny Thompson,Tyrone Lewis and Chris Pendleton are all ranked second. Shane Roller and Muhammed Lawal are ranked second, while Jerrod Sanders is ranked fifth. Skyler Holman maintains his ninth ranking, while Jake Rosholt and Willie Gruenwald are ranked 13th and 18th, respectively.
Have we met?
When the whistle blows and the matches start, and the athletes step onto the mat, all 10 will have faced each other at least once. OSU has the series advantage in all but three of the bouts, with the only tie at 141 pounds and at 149 pounds the two have not met yet. OU's only advantages comes at 125 and 184 pounds. Bo Maynes has a 2-0 record against Skyler Holman, while Josh Lambrecht and Jake Rosholt have only wrestled twice previously with Lambrecht winning both. The Cowboys' Johnny Thompson owns an 8-0 mark against OU's Witt Durden, while Shane Roller, Tyrone Lewis and Chris Pendleton all have 2-0 records against their opponents.
