Cowgirl Soccer Heads To Big 12 Tournament
November 04, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
The eighth Big 12 Conference Soccer Tournament will take place Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 6, 7 and 9 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. Tickets for the event are $5 per day or $10 for a three-day pass and can be purchased statewide in Texas through Ticketmaster or at the stadium.
Cowgirls In San Antonio
Oklahoma State is making its second straight appearance in the Big 12 Tournament to be held in San Antonio this week at the Blossom Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls enter as the No. 7 seed and will face second-seeded Texas in the first round. If the Cowgirls get past the Longhorns, they will face the winner of the Kansas vs. Oklahoma contest.
Last year the Cowgirls qualified for the tournament, marking the first time in program history as the eighth seed, facing top-seeded Texas A&M in the first round. The Cowgirls lost to the eventual tournament runner-up, 5-0.
OSU defeated Texas 3-1 earlier this season in Stillwater for the Cowgirls first victory against the Longhorns in program history.
Head Coach Karen Hancock
Karen Hancock is in her eighth year at Oklahoma State, having started the program in 1996. Hancock holds a 68-72-11 record at OSU and has led the Cowgirls to their second consecutive Big 12 Tournament appearance. Under her guidance, both the 2002 and 2003 squads jumped out to a 10-0 start. Last year's squad finished 13-7-0 to set a school record for wins in a season. Hancock's hard work paid off when the Cowgirls qualified for the Big 12 Tournament for the first time and she earned Co-Big 12 Coach of the Year honors.
Dominating the Opposition
In addition to posting an impressive 12-4-3 record, OSU has dominated its opponents on the field. The Cowgirls have outscored their opponents 57-14, including seven contests won by four or more. The Cowgirls have outshot the opposition 362-204 and hold a 188-87 shots on goal advantage. OSU has another lopsided advantage in corner kicks, taking 143 to its opponents 61.
Cowgirls Shatter The Records
Oklahoma State's 2003 squad continues to break into the record books. The Cowgirls had an amazing 51 shots against McNeese State earlier this season, surpassing the old record of 38 set last year against East Central. Oklahoma State has taken 20 or more shots in eight contests this season and registered double-digits in all but four outings. The Cowgirls have been strong defensively as well, posting 10 shutouts to set a school record for the second straight season. The defense has held opponents to 10 shots or less 11 times this season.
