Cowgirl Soccer falls to Auburn, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament
November 17, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
Oklahoma native Jac Schwarz gave Auburn the early advantage, scoring two minutes and fifty-eight seconds into the contest. Sarah Steinmann dug the ball out of the left side and found Chrissy Culver in the middle. Culver then passed off to Schwarz who beat Kathrin Lehmann for the goal from eight yards out.
Auburn controlled the opening minutes of the contest and the game was 24 minutes old before OSU took its first shot.
“First I want to give Auburn a lot of credit,” commented head coach Karen Hancock. “They came out with a lot of intensity and really played well. The opening minutes were the difference in the game.”
Oklahoma State had three shots hit the crossbar and forced Auburn goalkeeper Megan Rivera to make five saves but could not find the back of the net in 90 minutes of play.
Oklahoma State battled to the end and had its best chance to score in the final minute. Lisa Fulton took a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and the follow from Cassie Lewis was smothered by Rivera to clench the win for Auburn.
“It's been a great season,” commented Hancock. “This program reached several milestones this year and I am extremely proud of this team.”
Oklahoma State finishes the season at 15-5-3 overall, its most successful season in program history. The Cowgirls set a school record for season wins, won the Big 12 Tournament and earned their first berth in the NCAA Tournament.
