Looking Ahead
Oklahoma State's soccer squad opens the home portion of its schedule on Friday as they host Louisiana-Lafayette at 5 p.m. The Cowgirls will wrap-up the weekend at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Stephen F. Austin at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls are 5-1 in home openers and have outscored their opponents 30-6 in those games. OSU's lone loss came in 1999 to Texas Christian, 4-2.
UL-Lafayette (0-1-1) spent the weekend at the Baylor Labor Day Classic in Waco, Texas. On Friday, the Rajun' Cajuns were outshot by Baylor 21-1 and lost the game, 3-0. On Sunday, UL-Lafayette battled to a 1-1 tie with TCU.
The tilt on Friday will be the first meeting between the Cowgirls and the Ragin' Cajuns. Stephen F. Austin (0-2-0) was shut out by Louisiana State, 2-0, in its season opener and fell to North Texas, 1-0, on Tuesday.
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with SFA 2-0-0. The last meeting between the two squads was in 1997 when the Cowgirls blanked the Ladyjacks, 4-0, in Stillwater. In 1996, OSU defeated SFA, 5-2, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Week in Review
Oklahoma State opened the 2002 season with two road wins, defeating Oral Roberts and Tulsa at the Mazzio's Oklahoma Shootout hosted by ORU.
On Friday, OSU faced tournament host, Oral Roberts, and exploded for three first period goals to put the Golden Eagles away early.
Both teams were quiet for the first 20 minutes of play but the Cowgirls quickly came alive, finding the back of the net three times in the final 25 minutes of the stanza.
Kim Graves and Jolene Schweitzer combined for the first goal of the season when Schweitzer ran up the left flank and shot the ball back to Graves in the middle for the score.
OSU continued to roll 12 minutes later when Jere Boykin scored on a Nikki Wojtowicz free kick. Wojtowicz placed the ball perfectly and Boykin took advantage, heading the ball in for the score.
As the first period was winding down, Schweitzer took a pass from Krista Dedmon and beat her defender one-on-one down the left flank to round out the OSU scoring in the game.
ORU made a late charge in the 63rd minute of the game on a Heidi Ritze goal, but it was too little too late.
The Cowgirls extended their winning streak to two games on Sunday, defeating Tulsa, 3-1 to wrap up the weekend.
Dedmon was the first Cowgirl to strike, finding the back of the net at the 6:13 mark on a deflected corner by Wojtowicz.
Both the Cowgirl and Golden Hurricane defense stepped it up a notch for the remainder of the first period and neither team was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Kim Graves broke the standstill in the 69th minute of the game, taking a Courtney Robb feed and sending a shot in from an awkward angle on the goal line.
With nine minutes remaining in the contest, Carla Dolomont sent a beautiful shot over the head of goalkeeper Kelly Wilson to give the Cowgirls a three shot advantage and some breathing room.
TU squelched hopes of an OSU shutout 30 seconds later when Holly Lorman and Jamie German combined for the goal.
The Cowgirls capped off a great weekend by capturing the tournament title. OSU edged Oklahoma, who also won both games, by a one point goal differential in a tie-breaker.
