STILLWATER, Okla. -
Looking Ahead
Oklahoma State's soccer squad will have two games this week to fine tune its game, before entering the conference portion of its schedule. The Cowgirls will host Northeastern State at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and travel to Missouri to face Drury at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
With 12 sophomores and seven freshmen on the roster, the 2002 squad has made an imprint on the record books. The Cowgirls have jumped out to a 6-0 start, the best in program history. The six consecutive wins is also a program best.
The offense has also been rolling for OSU as the Cowgirls have outscored their opponents 18-4 and taken almost 50 more shots, 90-41.
Northeastern State 2-1-2, tied Incarnate Word, 3-3, over the weekend.
Drury 0-5-1 dropped both of its games last week, falling to DePaul, 4-0, and Loyola-Chicago, 2-1, in overtime.
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with Northeastern State 2-0-0. Last year the Cowgirls also hosted the Lady Reds and came away with the win, 5-0.
The Cowgirls also hold a 2-0-0 advantage in the series with Drury. Oklahoma State posted a 4-0 shutout over the Panthers in Stillwater last year.
Week in Review
Oklahoma State picked up a pair of wins last week, downing Western Kentucky at home and Arkansas on the road.
In the WKU contest, defense was the key to start the game, as neither team took a shot for the first 25 minutes. Courtney Robb broke the standstill and jump-started the Cowgirls with a goal at the 25:29 mark.
The offense continued to roll as Jolene Schweitzer scored her fourth goal of the season exactly one minute later on an assist from Nikki Wojtowicz.
With just over 11 minutes to go in the half, Krista Dedmon took a cross from Schweitzer and sent a shot to left corner of the goal. It looked as if the attempt would fall short, but the ball managed to dribble over the goal line and give the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead at the half.
The Cowgirls looked posed to post their third consecutive shutout, but Western Kentucky scored at the 75:18 mark to break the streak.
Jere Boykin extended the Cowgirl lead to three once again, finding the back of the net five minutes later. Wojtowicz picked up her second assist of the night, feeding the ball to Boykin on the right side for the goal and final margin.
For the first time this season, Oklahoma State trailed its opponent and was forced to score two goals in the second half to stage a come-from-behind victory over Arkansas. The Lady'Backs took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Crystal Test with seven minutes left in the first half.
Freshman Cassie Lewis evened the score at the 57:42 mark, taking a feed from Carla Dolomont to score her third goal of the season.
Midway thru the second period, OSU took the lead for good. The Cowgirls leading scorer, Jolene Schweitzer, earned the game winner at the 70:53 mark, taking a shot from 20 yards out on the left side.
Foot Notes
- Senior goalkeeper Kat Doud has registered 10 shutouts as a Cowgirl to put her one short of sharing the lead atop the record books with Chrystal Emerson.
- Freshman Cassie Lewis has scored a goal in three of the last four contests.
- Sophomore Nikki Wojtowicz has 12 career assists and is two away from taking sole possession of second in the records.
- Arkansas' goal was the first Doud has surrendered since the Tulsa contest on Sept. 1.
- The goal by the Lady'Backs was also the first time OSU has allowed an opponent to score in the first period.
- Sophomore Jolene Schweitzer has five goals in six games this year, just three shy of her season total (8) as a freshman.
