BATON ROUGE, La. - Oklahoma State's Siri Alfheim followed up her national championship run at the indoor championships with a runner-up finish in the 5,000-meter run at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
Alfheim ran a time of 16 minutes, 00.47 seconds as the second to last qualifier to get in and was bettered only by Stanford's Lauren Fleshman. Alfheim's time also set a personal best by 12 seconds. Big 12 champion Sara Gorton of Colorado finished fourth and Big 12 runner-up Ann Marie Brooks of Missouri finished sixth.
Alfheim came from way down and moved her way up to the front of the race with less than a lap to go. She passed Gorton with about 50 meters to go and held on for second place.
"She (Alfheim) did a great job. She waited until the end and out ran everybody on the final kick. She ran the race of her life tonight. The bigger the race the better she performs. We are very happy with her," head coach Catrina Acosta said.
The Cowgirls will finish the meet with eight points and go into the final day of competition in a tie for 19th. Nebraska, Kansas State and Iowa State are the only three Big 12 schools ahead of OSU. They are in fifth, ninth and 11th place, respectively. UCLA and South Carolina are battling each other for the national championship.
