Game 6 - Texas 8, Oklahoma State 6 (Oklahoma State is eliminated)
Texas completed a four-game sweep of the Oklahoma State Cowboys Thursday afternoon with an 8-6 victory in the second elimination game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Tournament.
The Longhorns defeated the Cowboys twice by one run (3-2 and 2-1) along with a 7-4 decision on April 28 at Ditsch-Falk Field on the Texas campus.
Dustin Majewski and J.D. Reininger went a combined 6 for 10 in the contest with four runs batted in. The Texas twosome had three doubles, two coming from Reininger, and a homer by Majewski.
In the top of the second, Texas took the lead 1-0 when Reininger doubled to right center to score Brandon Fahey, who opened in the inning with a single to right. Fahey would later steal second and went to third on a ground out by Matt Rosenberg.
Oklahoma State tied the game at 1-1 when Matt Oakes scored on a wild pitch by Texas hurler Brad Halsey. The Cowboys then took the lead on a two-out double to left by first baseman Josh Fields for a 3-1 OSU advantage.
The Longhorns would then score three times in the top of the fourth with shortstop Michael Hollimon capping off the three-run uprising with a sacrifice fly to right field and a 4-3 Texas advantage. A Rosenberg single to right scored Jeff Ontiveros from second to make it 3-2. After a Reininger single to right to move Rosenberg to third, catcher Ryan Hubele tied the game at 3-3 with a single to right.
In the bottom of the inning, OSU loaded the bases, but Texas reliever Jesen Merle came in to force Brian Kraft to groundout to first to end the threat.
Texas extended the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth when Majewski blasted a solo homer into the right field bullpen.
The Cowboys cut the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when pinch hitter Zach Cates doubled and scored on a ground out by Jeff Salazar. OSU had the tying run 90 feet away, but Longhorn reliever Eugene Espineli got Kraft to ground out to end the threat.
Cowboy freshman Josh Fields tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh with a towering home run to left field, his third homer of the season.
Texas regained the lead in the top of the eighth as Hollimon singled to left to score Reininger from third after he led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Tim Moss then singled to right, moving Hollimon to third and he advanced to second on the throw.
The hit extended Moss's hitting streak to nine games. Majewski broke the game open with a two-run double into the left field corner for an 8-5 Longhorn advantage.
OSU got a run back in the bottom of the inning when designated hitter Jake Bollig to right center to trim the Texas lead to 8-6.
Huston Street went the final 2 2/3 innings for the Longhorns to pickup his third victory of the season. Mike Patitucci was saddled with the loss for OSU.
Texas will face the loser of the Oklahoma-Texas A&M game at 7 p.m. Friday night.
Cowboy starter Chris Reilly began his collegiate career at Seton Hall and was 10-1 there and 5-0 at OSU before losing to Texas in Austin 2-1 on April 27.
