Cowboy Golf Finishes Second at Big 12 Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan.--Oklahoma State's men's golf team staged a furious rally during the final round of the Big 12 Championship before finishing one stroke behind Texas on Tuesday at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The Cowboys, who entered the event's final 18 holes 17 strokes behind Oklahoma and 10 behind Texas, shaved 12 shots off the deficit with a five-under-par team score on the front nine to pull within five of the lead. Despite turning in the day's low round, a three-under 277, OSU's 54-hole total of 851 was unable to overtake Texas' 850 team score.
Individually, senior Anders Hultman made up two strokes over the final two holes before winning individual medalist honors in a playoff over OU's John Kidwell. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native holed a 35-foot eagle putt on No. 17 before draining a six-footer for par on the 18th hole on his way to a final-round 65, giving him a seven-under total of 203 and forcing the extra hole.
A par by Hultman on the first playoff coupled with a bogey by Kidwell gave the 2001 Big 12 Player of the Year his first victory of the season and the fourth of his career.
Sophomore Hunter Mahan broke 70 for the second time in the tournament, firing a 67 to finish with a 210 total and tie for fourth place.
Freshman Alex Nor?n carded a two-over-par 72 to finish with an eight-over 218 total, while sophomore P?r Nilsson carded a 73 during his final round to finish two strokes behind Nor?n and in a five-way logjam for 18th place.
Dayton Rose rounded out the Cowboy lineup, tying for 52nd. The freshman's final-round 77 gave him a three-day total of 234.
OSU will return to action on May 11-12 when it travels to Ardmore, Okla., for The Maxwell.
